I am born and raised in Tkaronto, Kanata/Toronto, Canada. I’ve always had a passion for creativity and connecting with people from all walks of life.
I am a real-life mermaid, a visual artist, painter, illustrator, writer, publisher, story-teller, spoken word artist, mover, performer, costume enthusiast, early childhood educator, English language instructor, ExAT Therapist, creative wellness practitioner and overall creative connoisseur!
Since my earliest memories, I have loved art, writing and the experience of stories. Throughout different challenges I have faced in my life, creative expression was always there to support me, guide me, and offer paths to healing and awareness.

As an adult, I pursued a formal education in Visual Arts, earning two certificates over 4 years of skill-based Fine Arts training. I moved on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Studies which included two international placements in Kingston, Jamaica and Tampere, Finland as well as placements here in Canada. I most recently completed a TESL Ontario post-graduate diploma and a post-graduate diploma in Expressive Arts Therapy. My educational pursuits have all been rooted in play, imagination, creativity and innovation, as these are areas of interest that bring me joy, purpose and fulfillment.
My life journey has taken me far and wide. I have created the opportunities to travel the world: for study, work, leisure, expansion, education, and connection. I’ve made it to many places thus far, including Canada, America, Mainland China, (11 provinces), Jamaica, Hong Kong, England, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Taiwan, Malaysia, Cambodia, Borneo, Inner Mongolia, Belize and Guatemala. There are so many more places I haven’t been and want to see and experience.
I am a passionate humanitarian and environmentalist, fueled by culture, connection, nature and learning. All of my travels have been incredible experiences that allowed me to immerse myself in diverse cultures, and witness stunning landscapes that I had only ever imagined. Each experience offered its own set of challenges and rewards, making my travels memorable and eye-opening.

I would like also like to share some of the struggles I have faced. Life is constantly full of challenges, and I have been no stranger to adversity. I have struggled in my mental health which came with self-sabotaging habits. I have lived through a traumatic brain injury and concussion. I have experienced sexual violence and harassment, and have been through the legal system three times as a survivor. I am a Cancer survivor and thriver. All of these experiences while difficult and disorienting, have helped me find my voice, connect to a deep sense of self-love, and have shaped my interest in advocacy, social justice, personal justice and healing. Community empowerment and anti-oppression are embedded in the core of my identity, not in spite of, but because of these experiences.
I am currently diving into self-employment as a language educator and expressive arts therapist. These two professions feel very true to who I am and who I’ve always been. English, Art and helping have always been my jam, since the very beginning.
As an entrepreneur, I have a small organization Scribbles & Rhymes, where I have published two illustrated children’s books and produced other children’s content. I am also launching a small publishing house, Little Flower Press, which will publish my creative writing in the form of poetry, memoirs and perhaps other projects yet to be imagined. My spoken word poetry is shared under my name Mermaid Little Flower. Additionally, I offer English language classes through English With Shawna, and I offer Expressive Arts Therapy with HEAL, Home of Expressive Arts and Love. I also offer art commissions, in paintings and drawings, as well button making services with Made By Shawna Lee.
